WA Parents: It's time to make your voices heard!
OSPI is advising schools to hide mental and medical health records from parents!
In March of this year, the state legislature passed citizen initiative 2081, also known as the Parents’ Bill of Rights. This initiative pertains strictly to the rights of parents in education. It is very narrow in scope and does not change existing anti-family laws. It is a good step in the right direction, but parents need to stay on guard and understand the existing laws and the extend of I-2081.
Washington OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction) has a webpage dedicated to the implementation of I-2081 where school board directors, staff, parents and community can go to learn more and to ask questions. The page has a very short survey where people can comment, ask questions, share concerns.
The October report of I-2081’s implementation stated:
“To date, OSPI has received 34 questions and comments through its I-2081 website tool. OSPI received the largest amount of engagement from school district staff, followed by community members and parents/families. Most respondents indicated that they had either concerns (47%) or The purpose of this report is to provide updates to the Legislature about OSPI’s implementation of Initiative 2081, and to summarize questions and concerns raised by the public. Page | 2 questions (38%) about implementation, followed by some comments expressing support for the initiative (9%).”
Parents were the smallest group to respond to the survey during October. It’s critical that parents make their voices heard about this issue! Our CLW team receives many questions about I-2081 implementation every week - please don’t hesitate to reach out to us but also send your questions/concerns to OSPI by completing the survey HERE.
These advisories to school districts from OSPI in the October report are highly concerning and should be alarming to parents of children in WA’s public schools.
The primary concern with implementation is regarding medical and mental health records. OSPI report tells schools that these records "may not be released under current injunction."
They claim "gender identity" is different than "sexual orientation" and since gender identity is not mentioned in 2081, they don't have to disclose it to parents.
Districts are advised NOT to revise their "gender inclusive schools" policies unless authorized by courts, waleg, AG or OSPI to do so.
This is a screenshot of the survey - it’s quick and easy. Please take a few moments to send your comments and concerns to OSPI so they know that this is not acceptable to be hiding medical and mental health information and gender identity from parents.
