Our 5 areas of policy focus here at Conservative Ladies of America are: 1st Amendment, 2nd Amendment, Parental Rights, Education & the Right to Life. But sometimes, we have to step out of our “lane” when an issue is going to impact our audience significantly. This bill is such an issue.
SB 5770 was introduced at the very end of last session, but did not advance. It’s a terrible bill that wouldtriple the growth rate of annual property tax collections for Washington governments. Currently, these governments can collect 1% more annually in property tax, plus any revenues attributable to the value of new construction, without seeking voter approval. SB 5770 would set the cap at 3% and redefine the calculation used to determine how the 3% cap is reached, making it easier for local officials to justify tax increases each year.
This bill will be very consequential for Washington taxpayers who are already struggling to make ends meet. According to Forbes, Washington is #8 in the country for cost of living and #4 for housing cost. And Washington democrats want to make it even more costly for citizens.
Under the title “Providing state and local property tax reform,” SB 5770 would change the voter-approved property tax growth factor for the state and local governments from 1% to 3% while also changing the definition of inflation to grow faster by using the CPI instead of IPD measure.
