SB 5022 is a newly pre-filed bill by Washington democrats which would update the revised code of Washington to allow for people who are legally authorized to work in the United States to be able to serve in positions in law enforcement and in the prosecuting attorney's offices throughout the state of Washington.
This bill has been filed by Senator John Lovick from WA’s 44th LD. Last year Senator Lovick sponsored SB 6157 which allowed DACA recipients to be hired in law enforcement. The bill was passed unanimously in the senate and only 11 House Republicans voted no. With that in mind, it would seem safe to assume SB 5022 will also be easily passed.
We will let you know how you can make your voice heard on this bill during the 2025 session as soon as it is scheduled for a public hearing at which time you will be able to take a few different courses of action, from signing in you position to testifying in person or virtually during the public hearing.
